How Many National Parks Are in Nevada?

Nevada has one national park entirely within its borders: Great Basin National Park, out on the state's eastern edge near the Utah line. A second one, Death Valley National Park, spills across the southwestern border — most of it sits in California (which is where it counts on your checklist), but some of its hottest, emptiest country is Nevada soil. So depending on how you count, the answer is one park, or one and a half.

Great Basin: Nevada's National Park

Great Basin may be the most underrated park in the system. In one afternoon you can drive the Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive from sagebrush desert to over 10,000 feet, hike among bristlecone pines that have been alive for nearly 5,000 years — among the oldest living things on Earth — and tour the marble passages of Lehman Caves, famous for rare shield formations. Wheeler Peak itself tops out at 13,063 feet and shelters one of the southernmost glaciers in the country.

Because it's hours from the nearest city, Great Basin also has some of the darkest night skies in America — it's a certified International Dark Sky Park, and the Milky Way here is bright enough to cast shadows. There's no entrance fee; cave tours are the only thing you book ahead. The gateway town is Baker, about an hour from Ely on the "Loneliest Road in America" (US 50).

Beyond the Parks: Other National Park Sites in Nevada

The National Park Service runs several other sites in Nevada worth adding to a trip:

• Lake Mead National Recreation Area — America's first national recreation area, wrapped around the reservoir behind Hoover Dam; boating, coves and desert canyons just outside Las Vegas.
• Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument — Ice Age fossil beds on the northern edge of Las Vegas, where mammoths, American lions and dire wolves once gathered at desert springs.
• Death Valley National Park (Nevada side) — the park's Nevada corner includes the ghost-town country around Rhyolite and the Nevada Triangle backcountry.

Only Great Basin counts toward the Nevada line on your national park checklist — but if you're driving in from Vegas, Death Valley is the natural add-on.
