Crater Lake: Oregon's National Park

Oregon's one national park holds the deepest lake in the United States. Crater Lake plunges 1,943 feet into the collapsed shell of Mount Mazama, a volcano that blew itself apart about 7,700 years ago. No rivers flow in or out — the lake is filled entirely by snow and rain, which is why the water is among the clearest and bluest on Earth. Established in 1902, it's one of the oldest national parks in the system, and the view from the rim genuinely does not photograph as blue as it looks in person.

The classic visit is the 33-mile Rim Drive circling the caldera, with Wizard Island — a volcano that grew inside the volcano — rising from the western end of the lake. Boat tours run to the island in summer, reached by the Cleetwood Cove Trail, the only legal route down to the water. Plan around snow: the park averages over 40 feet of it a year, and the full Rim Drive is typically only open from roughly July into October. The rim village and south entrance stay open year-round for snowshoeing above the frozen blue.
