Gateway Arch: The Smallest National Park

Missouri's one national park is the system's great outlier. Gateway Arch National Park covers just 91 acres of downtown St. Louis riverfront — the smallest national park by far, and the only one that's entirely urban. Its centerpiece is Eero Saarinen's 630-foot stainless steel arch, the tallest man-made monument in the United States, built in the 1960s as a memorial to America's westward expansion. A four-minute tram ride inside the arch's legs lifts you to a viewing room at the top, with Illinois on one side and the whole city on the other.

Below ground, the Museum at the Gateway Arch traces the story of the Louisiana Purchase, the fur trade and the overland trails that funneled through St. Louis — and it's free, though the tram ride is ticketed and sells out on summer weekends, so book ahead. The park also includes the Old Courthouse, where Dred and Harriet Scott sued for their freedom in the 1840s. It became a national park in 2018, upgraded from the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, which is why it makes for one of the easiest — and most argued-about — checkmarks on any park list.
